Airton Aims to Secure a Commanding Tour Lead: GKA Germany Day One

Championship contender Mitu Monteiro crashes out early, while title chasers Matchu Lopes, Paulino Pereira and Airton Cozzolino remain in the final heats in this crucial penultimate contest of the season. Today’s action was fast paced in Fehmarn at the Kitesurf World Cup, the fourth stop on the 2017 GKA Kite-Surf World Tour, as riders progressed through the trials and the first four rounds of the main event in strong westerly winds. The HydroFoil Pro Tour and Kite Park League are also sharing the event site and running events in tandem with the GKA. In this busy beachside festival setting at surely the biggest kitesurfing event of the year, there’s a real buzz in the air at Sudstrand! Triumphant return for Julien / Photo: Joern Pollex The trials saw French rider Julien Kerneur make his return to the tour after breaking his leg at the Tarifa Strapless Pro last year and he surged into the main event alongside his Airush teammate, American Reider Decker. The flying Dutchman Steven Akkersdijk is also here and, although primarily known for being a Red Bull King of the Air big-air specialist, he showed his range and versatility on the surfboard as well. Pringles Kitesurf World Cup Fehmarn – Day Nine

It was a very early start for the riders and crew on day nine at the WKL Germany, with the skipper’s meeting taking place at 6.30 am. Although the forecast had been promising, the wind was disappointing, and remained just a few knots lighter than necessary. Finally at around midday the wind increased to around 14 knots, and we were able to get underway with the Men’s main event, Round 1 Heat 2. Most riders were on 14 metre kites, and although the conditions were challenging, most managed to pull out some solid, powered tricks, but it was Liam Whaley who dominated his heat, and landed a nice Backside 317 that scored him 8.23 points. Liam managed to remain at the top throughout his heat, guaranteeing his spot in the next round. Our previous event winner Luis Alberto Cruz unfortunately failed to connect with the conditions during his heat, leading to him being eliminated from the event. The second upset of the heat was also former event winner from Germany last year, Aaron Hadlow from the UK, who failed to find the wind he needed during his heat and suffered a surprise exit. Posito Martinez from the Dominican Republic rode …

Pringles Kitesurf World Cup Fehmarn – Day Eight

The forecast had seemed promising, but once again the winds failed to appear today in Fehmarn. After another early start, the freestylers were kept on hold throughout the day. At 2pm the winds seemed to be slightly more consistent, so an attempt was made to commence with the slalom. Unfortunately it also had to be abandoned as the winds dropped suddenly. There continued to be plenty of activity around the event site, with many visitors attending for the weekend. The top kiteboarding brands offered people a chance to view all of their new 2017 equipment. We would like to present the Board Members of the WKL. These four members have been voted in by their fellow riders. Their role is to assist with important decision making regarding all aspects of the tour. The current board members are Youri Zoon, Bruna Kajiya, Alex Pastor and Liam Whaley. Due to the unfortunate wind conditions that we have had throughout the event in Fehmarn, a meeting was held to discuss how to proceed in order to complete the event in the shortest amount of time possible. With a very reduced wind window for the final two days, it was eventually decided to run …

Pringles Kitesurf World Cup Fehmarn – Day Five

Day Five in Fehmarn, Germany, started with a bang. After another early 7am skipper’s meeting, the much anticipated Men’s Freestyle Main Event finally got underway. The conditions were a slight improvement on yesterday, blowing around 15 knots, and not as off-shore as we have seen previously. For Round 1, Heat 1, we saw Adeuri Corniel from the Dominican Republic put on a strong display, landing a nice Backside 317 scoring 7.87 points. Former World Champion Youri Zoon from the Netherlands put on an outstanding performance, hoping to make up for his errors in the previous event in Cabarete where he got knocked out in Round 1. His efforts were well rewarded with several high scores including the highest scoring trick of the day, a nice Frontside 317 which gave him 8.37 points. It was Zoon and Corniel who gained 1st and 2nd position and will be passing directly through to Round 3. Passing through to the second round will be Set Teixera from Brasil and Paul Serin from France, who both battled hard to remain in the top 4 and therefore gain a second chance in the next round. The second heat of Round 1 for the men unfortunately was …
