Moona and Mitu reign supreme in Cabo Verde

Mitu Monteiro and Moona Whyte are the big champions of the GKA Kite-Surf World Cup Cabo Verde! Check the report below. Mitu and Moona hold tight at the top to Prevail at Ponta Preta Words: Matt Pearce / Photos: Ydwer van der Heide and Gabriele Rumbolo After four days of absolutely all-time conditions at Ponta Preta, Mitu Monteiro and Moona Whyte retained their first place positions from the single eliminations and won the doubles today to become the champions of the GKA Kite-Surf World Cup Cabo Verde! It was edge-of-the-seat viewing and an absolute barrel-fest throughout as Airton Cozzolino and Inês Correia launched all-out assaults, fighting their way through four consecutive heats each to make the finals. Here’s how it went down. MEN’S DIVISION Airton began his relentless march up the double elimination ladder with a victory over Sebastian Ribeiro. He opened with a perfect barrel and took the lead early but, when he went in to change boards, Sebastian began closing gap with seamless surf-style lip smacks. Airton returned to the point though, regained his flow and notched up a 9.23 to move through to the next heat. He then went up against Francesco Cappuzzo who was clinical and …

The final 12 riders emerge at the GKA Cabo Verde on day three

The third day of competition in Cape Verde had nine hours of heats in the double eliminations. Check here the report. IT’S DOWN TO THE LAST MEN AND WOMEN STANDING AT PONTA PRETA Words: Matt Pearce / Photos: Ydwer van der Heide The non-stop pace of competition continued yesterday in Cabo Verde as a field of 52 riders was whittled down to just 12 – six men and six women. The waves were slightly smaller than on previous days but they were still in steady supply with solid conditions across another nine hours of heats in the double eliminations. Nine hours is a long time to stay glued to the livestream, so if you didn’t catch all of the action here are some of the key performances. COZZOLINO ON THE COMEBACK Airton’s early exit in the single-eliminations had lit a fire under him and on the evening of day two he was riding alone until sunset, prowling through the Ponta Preta line-up like a caged beast out for revenge. Yesterday he rode like a man possessed. In his first heat he launched huge airs off the lip (no mean feat in offshore conditions) alongside several cover-ups, including the best barrel …

On Day Two Moona Whyte and Mitu Monteiro won the Single Eliminations at Ponta Preta. Check the report below! MOONA AND MITU STORM THE SINGLE ELIMINATIONS Words: Matt Pearce / Photos: Ydwer van der Heide Yesterday we saw another non-stop day of heats as both the men and women wrapped up the single eliminations during nine hours of competition. The run of insane conditions continued with Ponta Preta delivering absolutely pumping waves reaching double overhead and above. The main stories of the day? Well Mitu Monteiro scored a perfect 10, Moona Whyte made an epic return to competition and James ‘Storm Boy’ Carew underlined how much of a true force of nature he really he is by making it to the final against Mitu. That’s just some of what went down. Here’s a few highlights. JAMES CAREW James has been a man on fire here at the GKA Cabo Verde. The Australian managed to unseat Airton Cozzolino in the quarter finals (on Airton’s home break no less) in a nail biting quarter final heat. Airton was leading for much of it with solid aerials off the lip and super-powered hacks but James kept answering back with his muscular, surf-influenced style. …
