GKA Kite-Surf World Tour Dakhla – Double Eliminations Action

Watch the action highlights of the Double Eliminations of Day 3 in Dakhla. Day three in Dakhla and the crew pushed through the double eliminations until just eight riders remained in both the men’s and the women’s competitions. We look to Friday and the weekend for good conditions and the climax to round two of the GKA Kite-Surf World Tour 2018.

Kite-Surf World Tour Dakhla – Day Three – Double Eliminations

The table opens up as the riders get a second chance in the Double Eliminations Thursday was another stacked day of competition with the riders who’d dropped out of the running during Wednesday’s single eliminations back in action in the double eliminations – their second opportunity to climb back up the tables. If you’re not familiar with this format, it doesn’t mean a total rerun of an event – the winner of the singles is already in the final, the runner-up is already in the semis, and so on. However, it does give any rider the chance to make a heroic surge back up the ladder like Jalou Langeree did last year in Mauritius (almost making the final in the process). The Race Crew surveys the scene first thing this morning / Photo: Ydwer van der Heide They would be judged on a split criteria again, this time 60% wave riding and 40% strapless freestyle due to the shifting conditions which were seeing competitors in some heats searching for waves while in other heats riders were scoring set after set. Kite-Surf World Tour Dakhla Kick-Off

The GKA Kite-Surf World Tour riders rolled into Dakhla late Monday night on the eve of the second tour stop of 2018. A core contingent of riders has been in situ since early last week, tuning in to the conditions and preparing for this event that will see Airton Cozzolino and Moona Whyte taking on all comers as they battle to defend their overall tour leads. Not deterred by his unfortunate early exit at the last event in Cape Verde, Matchu Lopes is fired up and ready to go / All photos: Ydwer van der Heide Airton and Moona took their top spots two months ago in Cape Verde when the tour kicked off at another storied right-hander, Ponta Preta, but the point margins are slim and a number of riders will be eyeing their positions this week in Dakhla and pushing them all the way. Airton clocks in for this week’s shift at the GKA Dakhla Although many of the riders were still shaking off jet lag having travelled from as far away as Hawaii and Southern Australia, it was straight into registration at the Westpoint Dakhla Hotel yesterday morning where 48 riders registered for the event. 34 men …
