The GKA Cabo Verde single eliminations wrap up on day two

On Day Two Moona Whyte and Mitu Monteiro won the Single Eliminations at Ponta Preta. Check the report below! MOONA AND MITU STORM THE SINGLE ELIMINATIONS Words: Matt Pearce / Photos: Ydwer van der Heide Yesterday we saw another non-stop day of heats as both the men and women wrapped up the single eliminations during nine hours of competition. The run of insane conditions continued with Ponta Preta delivering absolutely pumping waves reaching double overhead and above. The main stories of the day? Well Mitu Monteiro scored a perfect 10, Moona Whyte made an epic return to competition and James ‘Storm Boy’ Carew underlined how much of a true force of nature he really he is by making it to the final against Mitu. That’s just some of what went down. Here’s a few highlights. JAMES CAREW James has been a man on fire here at the GKA Cabo Verde. The Australian managed to unseat Airton Cozzolino in the quarter finals (on Airton’s home break no less) in a nail biting quarter final heat. Airton was leading for much of it with solid aerials off the lip and super-powered hacks but James kept answering back with his muscular, surf-influenced style. …

The first heats were rolling by 07:00 and Carla Herrera kicked things off beating Anna Williams as she began her push for a shot at the top of the podium (remember, this is a winner takes-all-event between Carla and Jalou Langeree – who finishes on top wins the Championship!) Carla carves / Photo: Ydwer van der Heide Next up, tour number four Johanna Catharina Edin from Sweden narrowly edged past Duotone teammate Lyde Heckroodt from South Africa in a tight heat. Both riders had to work hard to find point scoring sections but they made it work with well executed cut backs, milking the waves for all they were worth. It was hard to tell which one …

GKA Air Games Cabarete 2018 – Day Two

The GKA Air Games Cabarete takes flight. Today was flat-out from the start and stacked with heats at the GKA Air Games Cabarete as 38 riders battled through the single-eliminations powered by the super-consistent Cabarete conditions. After yesterday’s slow start, the riders were eager to get moving and the men’s division was up first with a posse of talented local riders taking to the water for the first time on the GKA Kiteboarding World Tour, all of them out to represent on home turf! Hilario the home town hero Robinson Hilario was impressive from the beginning, blending big airs with old school flair before switching to his wakestyle board with boots and stomping powered technical passes. This was a tactic we’d regularly see throughout the day, with riders making sure they’d racked up some high scoring, unhooked tricks before heading back to shore and going out with their strapped board and sending some airs (or vise versa). In round two, the first riders began to drop and some of the tour’s top riders hit the water for the first time. Jesse Richman struck hard with a huge double half cab and Carlos Mario, who took third in Tarifa, exploded into …
