GKA Kite-Surf World Tour Portugal -Day Two

There were no changes in the wind stakes today in Viana do Castelo but the rain’s stopped, the sun’s begun to shine and the swell’s not backing off either! Airton, Mitu and the boys seize on a selfie opportunity / Photo: Ydwer van der Heide The wind doesn’t tend to fill in before midday here when a thermic effect builds on the mountains that lie a little further inland from Viana, so this morning the riders headed into town to take in some culture and explore while they waited to see what conditions the day would bring. The crew hits the streets of Viana / Photo: Ydwer van der Heide Viana’s charming with a sleepy vibe, a picturesque old town and some stunning views from atop the hill where an imposing stone-built church, the Santuário de Santa Luzia, looks over Viana itself and the kite spot down on Cabedelo beach. The riders were stoked to get a chance to eye up the spot from such a vantage point and, after two days of no wind, they might also welcome some intervention from a higher being right now as they wait to kick off the main event! Final Event Overview and Highlights Sunday marked the final day of the GKA KSWT 2018 stop in Dakhla and what’s been a very successful second event on this year’s tour. The riders got through a barrage of heats in the single and then double eliminations this week thanks to the relentless Dakhla winds, and Airton Cozzolino has now lengthened his overall lead, making it two wins from two events so far this season. Jalou Langeree also took her first ever KSWT event win to draw level with Moona Whyte and they’re now equal on points at the top of the women’s division! Kite-Surf World Tour Dakhla – Day Two – Single Eliminations

Airton gets one hand on a double event win and Jalou strikes back as the riders storm through the Single Eliminations The Single Elimination finalists at the end of a long day of competition / Photo: Ydwer van der Heide The single eliminations fired into action at the start of Wednesday and the event crew stormed all the way through to the finals of this first stage of competition. Nine-and-a half hours later the single elimination results were in! The wind forecast looks good, but the waves may drop off in the coming days, so at least there’s a result in the bag should things deteriorate in the week. If you’re unfamiliar with this format, the riders will now go into another round, the double elimination, where they will compete in order of their placings in the single elimination. So the winner of the singles is already in the final, the runner-up is already in the semis, and so on. It’s a second chance for a rider to become a hero and charge up the ladder.
