Solaire Blue Open 2017 – The Men’s Final Showdown

The conditions for the Men’s Final of the Solaire Blue Palawan Open could not have been any better. Sunshine, flat waters and a consistent 20+knts of wind that built throughout the day, it was the ideal amphitheatre for the spectators who had flocked to Blue to watch the showdown commence. 9 riders took turns to hit the the Solaire kicker, It’s More Fun In The Philippines roof top and North Kiteboarding fun Box, taking their single best score out of three hits on each feature to the points board. It was show-stopping stuff with each rider a prime contender for the podium. With the green and white flags up, it was time to put everything on the line, and everyone did! Heading up the videography team was Tom Court, working closely with Vincent Bergon. With such challenging conditions for capturing aerial footage, it was inevitable that the drone would eventually end up in the drink. Thankfully rice in the Philippines is everywhere and it dried out swiftly, making a full recovery. We’ll be catching up with the official judges for an breakdown later on and to hear more about who did what. Stay tuned!

Technical Talks at the Solaire Blue Open 2017

The 2017 Solaire Blue Open has seen some really creative and progressive riding. “Blue Palawan is not only one of the best locations for a park in the world, but it’s also one of the best parks out there. High quality welded HDPE features give riders the chance to ride and compete in a safe and consistent environment. Blue also provides riders with the opportunity to build more risky features if they wish (such as the bamboo rail). Blue has certainly given the riders and the KPL the ultimate park environment.” says judge Alex Rowdy. With the Men’s and Women’s Finals all wrapped up, we spoke with Eric Rienstra about all the epic action that went down. Women’s Heat 2 saw Sensi Graves pull out a few KPL ‘firsts’ with a ledge step up on the North Kiteboarding Box and Frontside 540s both ways on the kicker. Her highest score came on the Rooftop with a 180 Front 5050 Pretzel 270 Back Lip 270 scoring a 6. Colleen Carroll was able to come from behind with the highest scoring port kicker hit and a Toe Back 3 Melan which scored a 4.1. Annelous Lammerts took a relatively safe approach but …
