The final 12 riders emerge at the GKA Cabo Verde on day three

The third day of competition in Cape Verde had nine hours of heats in the double eliminations. Check here the report. IT’S DOWN TO THE LAST MEN AND WOMEN STANDING AT PONTA PRETA Words: Matt Pearce / Photos: Ydwer van der Heide The non-stop pace of competition continued yesterday in Cabo Verde as a field of 52 riders was whittled down to just 12 – six men and six women. The waves were slightly smaller than on previous days but they were still in steady supply with solid conditions across another nine hours of heats in the double eliminations. Nine hours is a long time to stay glued to the livestream, so if you didn’t catch all of the action here are some of the key performances. COZZOLINO ON THE COMEBACK Airton’s early exit in the single-eliminations had lit a fire under him and on the evening of day two he was riding alone until sunset, prowling through the Ponta Preta line-up like a caged beast out for revenge. Yesterday he rode like a man possessed. In his first heat he launched huge airs off the lip (no mean feat in offshore conditions) alongside several cover-ups, including the best barrel …

GKA Air Games Cabarete 2018 – Day Four

The Finals draw near as local heroes launch an assault up the elimination ladder. We’re getting down to the sharp end of the competition here at the GKA Air Games Cabarete and today we saw the competitive field whittled down to just six women and seven men as the final stages of the double eliminations beckon. THE MEN Set Teixeira battled hard today but couldn’t quite rise to Robinson The men were on the water first and Set Teixeira, Carlos Mario’s long-time friend from back home in Cumbuco (arguably the kiting world’s other freestyle hotbed alongside Cabarete), won his first heat comfortably to progress to the second round. Unfortunately for Set, he then encountered F-One team mate and local rider Robinson Hilario and, while Set may have the upper hand in terms of technical freestyle ability, Robinson had him when it came to raw power and height and he took the heat knocking Set out of the running. Robinson Hilario spins to win It was in this round that the Cabarete contingent began their charge up the elimination ladder and Luis Alberto Cruz was going all-out just as his performance yesterday had suggested he would. Huge airs and board-offs coupled …

Kite-Surf World Tour Dakhla – Day Three – Double Eliminations

The table opens up as the riders get a second chance in the Double Eliminations Thursday was another stacked day of competition with the riders who’d dropped out of the running during Wednesday’s single eliminations back in action in the double eliminations – their second opportunity to climb back up the tables. If you’re not familiar with this format, it doesn’t mean a total rerun of an event – the winner of the singles is already in the final, the runner-up is already in the semis, and so on. However, it does give any rider the chance to make a heroic surge back up the ladder like Jalou Langeree did last year in Mauritius (almost making the final in the process). The Race Crew surveys the scene first thing this morning / Photo: Ydwer van der Heide They would be judged on a split criteria again, this time 60% wave riding and 40% strapless freestyle due to the shifting conditions which were seeing competitors in some heats searching for waves while in other heats riders were scoring set after set. This would allow them to rack up points for their strapless freestyle ability if they hit a flat spell. Good …
