Kite-Surf World Tour Portugal – Champs are crowned on final day!

Matchu and Moona pounce on last day in Portugal – GKA Kite-Surf World Tour 2018 After five long days during which the riders of the KSWT just could not catch a break when it came to the wind, today, on the final day of the event window, their prayers were answered. The El Nortada winds arrived and the comp was on! KICK OFF Jalou rigging up / Photo: Ydwer van der Heide The day began with a light northerly and very minimal swell so the decision was made to focus on 100% strapless freestyle with the women’s single eliminations kicking off first. This was going to be a challenge for some of the women as not all of them have been regularly training in strapless freestyle but those who have rose to the challenge, setting themselves apart from the off. Jalou gets foot lose / Photo: Ydwer van der Heide Both Jalou Langeree and Moona Whyte, the tour’s two top ranked riders, are far more focused on wave riding but they’ve been training their strapless freestyle and it showed today. At the start of the season, Carla Herrera Oria had been the only female rider really pushing the freestyle element …

GKA Kite-Surf World Tour Portugal – Exploring Viana

Get to know Viana do Castelo – Day Four GKA Kite-Surf World Tour Cabadelo beach / Photo: Diogo Cardoso It might not have been the best week for wind here in Viana do Castelo so far but that doesn’t take anything away from what an incredible location this is. Before the event began, a number of the KSWT riders were in Viana early to train before the event and some of them scored solid days on the reeling rights of Cabedelo beach. For an idea of what it’s like when the conditions are on in Viana, click here to watch Charlie Wise and James Carew’s video filmed just before the KSWT Portugal. Righteous rights! / Photo: Juvenal Vieira (Feel Viana) This is the first time the tour has visited Portugal, and it’s got a lot of potential to become a firm favourite of the KSWT. If you’re thinking about checking out Viana do Castelo yourself, then here’s an overview of what you need to know. Monday’s Action Update: GKA KSWT Portugal

The El Nortada winds continued to tease yesterday but could today be the day? The lines roll in to Cabedelo beach – is the wind about to join the party? / Photo: Diogo Cardoso MONDAY’S OUTLOOK – ENOUGH TIME TO PUSH! The lack of wind stopped play yesterday (Sunday – although it was prime foiling and surfing weather once again) and that means it’s going to be close to the wire across the final two days of the competition window with 49 riders lining up to hit the water in this event. That said, things are looking up this morning (Monday) with the best forecast of the event so far due to arrive in the next couple of hours! A steady northerly wind is predicted to last right through until the end of the event and two full days of wind will be enough to get a result from the main event, so it’s going to be ‘action-stations’ this morning when the race crew gives the call! Stay tuned. SUNDAY’S INTRIGUE AND VIDEO INTERVIEWS It was another tantalisingly close day yesterday at Cabedelo beach. The conditions were markedly improving by mid-afternoon, the wind was blowing from the right direction and …

GKA Kite-Surf World Tour Portugal -Day Three

TIME TO TALK TECH AND SHARPEN THE TOOLS – DAY THREE GKA KITE-SURF WORLD TOUR PORTUGAL Jalou Langeree, Johanna-Catarina Edin, Moona Whyte and Evelien Bolle all faced off against each other on last year’s KSWT at the final tour stop in Mauritius. This event will be the first time they’ve all competed together this season / Photo: Ydwer van der Heide So the wind kept the riders and crew waiting once again today here at the KSWT Portugal. It had looked promising at this morning’s skippers meeting which prompted a flurry of activity as the riders rigged up for a possible start to men’s round one but the wind backed off as the rain came in and it never quite reached the required strength as the day wore on. It’s great seeing Theo Demanez back on the tour. He suffered a ruptured spleen earlier this year after a bad crash to the ribs which caused him to miss the last two events but he’ll be hoping to make up for lost time here in Viana do Castelo! / Photo: Ydwer van der Heide However, nobody was about to waste the day and so the riders used the time to fine …

GKA Kite-Surf World Tour Portugal -Day Two

There were no changes in the wind stakes today in Viana do Castelo but the rain’s stopped, the sun’s begun to shine and the swell’s not backing off either! Airton, Mitu and the boys seize on a selfie opportunity / Photo: Ydwer van der Heide The wind doesn’t tend to fill in before midday here when a thermic effect builds on the mountains that lie a little further inland from Viana, so this morning the riders headed into town to take in some culture and explore while they waited to see what conditions the day would bring. The crew hits the streets of Viana / Photo: Ydwer van der Heide Viana’s charming with a sleepy vibe, a picturesque old town and some stunning views from atop the hill where an imposing stone-built church, the Santuário de Santa Luzia, looks over Viana itself and the kite spot down on Cabedelo beach. The riders were stoked to get a chance to eye up the spot from such a vantage point and, after two days of no wind, they might also welcome some intervention from a higher being right now as they wait to kick off the main event! A popular surf beach that also benefits from the reliable el nortada winds, Cabedelo is protected by a large sea wall that makes for glassy wave riding conditions downwind of it on the lengthy, unbroken left-handers. The waves are rarely huge, but they’re clean and consistent making this place look like a real-life wave pool when it’s on. The GKA KSWT has landed in Portugal at Viana do Castelo for the event that runs until 12th June. The action will be taking place on Cabedelo Beach in front of event host, Feel Viana Hotel. At this time of year Viana do Castelo benefits from the reliable El Nortada winds as well as solid Atlantic swells. Reigning champ Airton Cozzolino has been steadily building his lead since round one in Cape Verde, but Keahi de Aboitiz has maintained consistent pressure from second place. With the tour about to reach its halfway point, if anyone’s going to unseat Airton, then this event is crucial. Airton Cozzolino – the man to beat / Photo: Ydwer van der Heide Things are also hotting up in the women’s division with top ranked riders Jalou Langeree and Moona Whyte now level on points, so this is a chance for someone to pull ahead. However, Portuguese rider Inês Correia has been unshakable in third place …
