Making Kiteboarding History – Elite League Finals in El Gouna

Final Day at the El Gouna RRD Centre Kiteboarding World Cup The final day at the El Gouna RRD Centre Kiteboarding World Cup was nothing short of spectacular. With 7 heats back to back throughout the day, we saw perfect 10’s, boundaries being pushed, tears, unfortunate injuries, and history being made for freestyle kiteboarding, as our champions for this 4th Elite League event were crowned in front of the fans on the beach of El Gouna. Women’s Semi-Finals The day commenced with the completion of the Semi-finals for the Women. Heat 7 saw the ladies struggling slightly being the first on the water, dealing with gustier wind and choppy waters. Local wildcard Nathalie Lambrecht tried her best, but could not land the tricks she really wanted to perform. Therese Taabbel, Danish Champion, fought her hardest to advance to the final, but unfortunately it was not to be. Francesca Bagnoli from Italy managed to perform an amazing Slim Chance on her last trick attempt, and this secured her 2nd place, and opened the door to the finals. She was delighted at this results, making this her second Elite League final this season. Annabel van Westerop remained calm and composed throughout the …

Elite League Day 2 – El Gouna RRD Centre Kiteboarding World Cup

Another day of wind and sunshine in El Gouna, Egypt. Day 2 of the Elite League allowed for the completion of Round 2 for the Women and Round 3 for the Men. The wind commenced with strong conditions in the early morning of 20 to 25 knots, and dropped in the early afternoon. Women’s Round 2 The first heat of the day was Heat 5 for the ladies. This saw two french riders, Maureen Castelle and Pauline Valesa, keep a safe lead ahead of their competitors throughout the duration of the heat. Dutch riders Isabeau Galiart and Lidwij Hartog struggled to maintain their composure during this second round of competition, which meant that it was Valesa and Castelle who advanced to the semi-finals, yet another very strong performance from the French team. Rita Arnaus started Heat 6 with a look of solid determination, eager to replicate her incredible performance in Akyaka, and things seemed to heading the right way when she landed an outstanding Hinterberger Mobe scoring her 9.1 points. However, she encountered some difficulties with the remainder of her trick attempts, and unfortunately did not advance any further in the competition much to her disappointment. Vera Klabbers from the …

Elite League Day 1 – El Gouna RRD Centre Kiteboarding World Cup

El Gouna was once again graced with good winds to start Day 1 of the Elite League event in Egypt. Slightly stronger and gustier than we have seen on previous days, it was sufficient to complete Rounds 1 and 2 for both the men and Round 1 for the women. The freestyle action was intense from the very start of Day 1. We witnessed many surprises, a few early exits, and a strong uprising of young kiteboarding talent ready to take on the established veteran riders. Men’s Round 1 Set Teixeira from Brazil showed us he was on fine form during Heat 1. He put on a confident display of riding throughout, and was extremely happy to pass directly through to Round 3. Luis Alberto Cruz from the Dominican Republic will be joining him, as he also showed determination to skip a round and advance through the competition. The other riders in Heat 1 were not as lucky, and struggled to really pull themselves together for this early start on the water. Alex Pastor, former World Champion, took a heavy crash on his 5th trick attempt and although he managed to relaunch his kite and return to shore, he was …

Qualifier League Finals – El Gouna RRD Kiteboarding World Cup

The competitors awoke to a much windier day today in El Gouna, with the wind already blowing between 18 and 22 knots from their arrival at the competition site at the RRD Center, an ideal setting for the finals of the Qualifier League. Small Finals First in sequence was the Men’s Small Final, which saw 6 participants battle it out on the water. The wind conditions were ideal for 9 metre kites. The riders each had 7 trick attempts during their heat, and each of them strived to make the most of each attempt, with every point counting. It was Luis Alberto Cruz from the Dominican Republic, our former Cabarete event winner, who remained firmly in control throughout the 40 minute heat. He landed 6 tricks with solid scores and gained the advantage by landing an outstanding Backside 315, placing him just a fraction above French rider Arthur Guillebert, who also fought hard for a top position. Arthur was unlucky and had three crashes during his heat, but fortunately his trick scores were high enough for him to maintain his 2nd position. Gianmaria Coccoluto came in 3rd, after riding well but struggling to maintain the consistent scores that he needed. …

Day Two at the El Gouna RRD Center Kiteboarding World Cup

Daybreak in El Gouna was accompanied by ideal wind conditions once again, a treat for competitors and spectators alike. It is the perfect example of why this location in Egypt is so popular for kiteboarding, and remains a firm favourite particularly for freestylers. However the wind conditions dropped slightly during the morning and put the competition on hold until 3pm, when it resumed and both the Men’s and Women’s semi-finals were completed. Men’s Semi-Finals The semi-finals for the Men were continued from yesterday, starting with the completion of Heat 11. As the wind strength was decreasing, the Men struggled to ride with power even on their biggest kites, however Anthar Racca from Mexico still managed to remain firmly in control, and landed 5 of his 6 trick attempts. His scores remained high enough to give him a good lead, and a position in the Qualifier League final. Val Garat from France joins him, as he finished a few points behind in second place. Both riders remain firmly on course for a good finish at this Qualifier Event, Anthar Racca who will be focused on gaining entry to the Elite League in 2018, and Val Garat who will be wanting to …
