Cape Hatteras Wave Classic presented by Patagonia Highlights & Week Recap

The 2016 Cape Hatteras Wave Classic presented by Patagonia brought the worlds best kite surfers together on Cape Hatteras from September 17th-23rd. The Men’s and Women’s competition was separated into two groups, 19 males, and 5 females. Over the course of the week we had a roller coaster of a forecast. The first day was a layday, which brought competitors to the beach, and into skate bowl’s to session until the sun went down. Jason Slezak knows this bowl better than anyone. Day two was our first day of competition, winds ~15mph average out of the Southeast gave competitors lefts, and rights to showcase their skills. The Waves brought enough ramps for airs, and faces for slashing. We ran through the first round, and majority of the second with the winds provided on Monday. Patri Mclaughlin Styling out an indy Grab Day three started with bang! The winds were strong, we set up quickly and got riders in the water with enough time to finish round 2 before we got hit by a rain squal. A switch in wind direction to offshore sent all of the competitors into the water to surf through the rest of the day. The vibe …

Cape Hatteras Wave Classic presented by Patagonia Day 4 Update

YES!! It’s windy. Why didn’t they run the comp? The Cape Hatteras Wave Classic presented by Patagonia uncorked the pent up breeze today with 15-25mph out of the East and onshore conditions. Men and Women competitors enjoyed powered conditions for airs and onshore wave riding. After three days of waiting, the breeze was ON and the stoke was HIGH. So why didn’t the contest run today? Event Director Trip Forman explains… “We didn’t run the contest today based on the following: We only have 4 permitted days in the National Park to complete the event. We’ve already used 2 days and have 2 days left to use by Friday. When it was time to make the status call early this morning, we were looking at pouring rain, no wind present at the permitted locations and the lightest wind forecast of the week. We made the call for “Lay Day” based on this info. The breeze filled in throughout the Tri-Village area (Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo) but never more than marginally into the areas southward where the contest is permitted to run. Do we view this as a negative? No. The competitors all got to ride in powered up conditions and that’s …

Cape Hatteras Wave Classic presented by Patagonia Day 1

The 3rd annual Cape Hatteras Wave Classic presented by Patagonia kicked off yesterday with competitor registration, plus an event Welcome Party and Dinner hosted by Watermen’s Bar & Grill. SOULone took the waterfront stage at 6pm and put on an incredible live music show through the evening hours. Looks like today will be a light wind “Lay Day” allowing competitors to settle into the Cape Hatteras scene with some surfing and skating. September swells have kicked in over the last few weeks, so there’s always a wave to surf somewhere on the island, plus the water and air are still boardshort warm. The forecast looks to wind up starting Monday/Tuesday with some potential SE winds and then again Wednesday with a healthy NE wind push. We have National Park permits for competition locations from the Tri-Villages all the way south thru Hatteras Village, allowing us to focus in on the best wind/wave combo for the day. You can follow the event status and location at REALwatersports.com/CHWC.
