Red Bull King of the Air 2019 – Action from Day 1

The first Four Rounds of the extreme big-air kiting contest were completed in epic conditions at Cape Town’s Kite Beach on Thursday 31 January.

The ‘Cape Doctor’ Southeasterly combined with a south-west swell offered ideal conditions for the world’s 18 best big air kiteboarders to take to the skies.

“We were lucky because we had a very big consistent patch of wind across the entire Peninsula,” commented Sportive Director Sergio Cantagalli after the day.

“It wasn’t too gusty and the wind was out of an south-south-easterly direction which was perfect,” he added.
“We managed to get the best out of the day and then when the wind started to drop we made the call to come back on the next good day in the waiting period,” he explained.

The judges based their scores on 70% Height and 30% Extremity. Riders needed to go as hard and high as possible – in short, pull controlled, extreme technically moves, at height.

Some of the highlights included a megaloop back-roll board by Kiwi Marc Jacobs, who pulled it coming toward the beach and landed in about a foot of water.

The day however was not without a few upsets. Crowd favourite and two-time winner of the event, Aaron Hadlow and SA’s Joshua Emmanuel having to retire due to injury in rounds two and four respectively.

“We were really happy with the way it all worked out. The action was really good,” Cantagalli said. “The was some good action from the new blood and some big moves from some of the more experienced riders, mixed with some big upsets, which made for a day of drama.”

In addition to the men’s action, for the first time ever the event also featured a women’s invitational expression session, which got the day’s proceedings underway. This featured Angely Bouillot (FRA) Hannah Whiteley (UK).

The event will be completed on next possible good day in the waiting period, which runs until 10 February. Stay tuned for updates.
