Tenerife PWA World Cup

The second day of the 2019 Tenerife PWA World Cup saw an entire morning and afternoon of waiting and for the majority of the day the conditions didn’t look particularly promising with only light winds and small waves on offer. However, patience eventually paid off with the wind and waves filling in shortly before 6pm, which allowed the Boy’s U15s and U17s divisions to be completed with a high level on offer.

Boy’s

U17s

Liam Dunkerbeck (Starboard / Severne) lined up against Lennart Neubauer (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) in the U17s Boy’s Final with both sailors dominating their semifinal heats against Cosme Martin (Fanatic) and Matsui Haru (Fanatic) respectively. In the final Neubauer made the brighter start with Dunkerbeck looking underpowered to begin with which allowed the young German to build an early lead after landing a 7.5 backloop and two decent waves of 4.5 and 4 points. However, once Dunkerbeck came in to change equipment the tie was turned on it’s head within a matter of minutes as the young Spaniard immediately landed a 9 point ankle dry backloop, before brilliantly working a wave both frontside and backside to earn an excellent 9 point score. That left Dunkerbeck needing only an average wave score, which he found at the second time of asking. Neubauer attempted almost 3-times the amount of wave rides as Dunkerbeck, but ultimately Dunkerbeck showed better wave selection and execution to claim the top spot on the podium.

Cosme Martin then claimed a decisive victory in the losers’ final to complete the podium ahead of Matsui Haru.

U15s

The 4-man U15s Boy’s Final saw Tobias Bjørnaa (Fanatic / Duotone) taking on Hayata Ishii (RRD / Goya Windsurfing), Carlos Kiefer Quintana (Fanatic / Duotone), who qualified by winning the opening U13s Final yesterday, and Giulio Gasperini (Starboard / Severne) to decide the U15s title. The Final proved to be unbelievably close with Bjørnaa, Ishii and Kiefer Quintana all finishing the heat tied on 13.5 points, but ultimately the victory went to Ishii, who won the GCWWF last month, with the young Japanese sailor having the joint highest wave score with Bjørnaa, while having the better second wave score - 4.5 points compared to 4 points. Bjørnaa finished second while Kiefer Quintana claimed a hugely impressive 3rd place after landing a 6 point backloop with Gasperini completing the top 4.

The forecast for tomorrow looks more promising than today with slightly stronger winds and a small increase in wave size - 1.4m - and given how this evening turned out that could see the Pro fleet single eliminations begin. Priority for tomorrow will now also go to the Pro’s with the forecast for Thursday and Friday looking lighter and smaller. The skippers’ meeting has been called for 10:30am (GMT+1) tomorrow morning with a first possible start at 11am, but it may be a day of late action given how Tuesday panned out.
